The Perfect Matchmaker
The story of Abraham's servant finding Rebecca is a beautiful example of how the Lord will bring a man and a woman in his kingdom together to fulfill his divine purpose. Abraham sent his servant to find a wife for Isaac among the women in his country and his family. Because of Jesus, women in the kingdom of God are not like women of the world. Kingdom women have a beauty that goes deeper than their flesh, and men in the kingdom of God, led by the Spirit of God, are looking for such women and vice-versa.
As kingdom people, we can learn from the servant's approach to finding love. When searching for a wife for Isaac, Abraham's servant described the type of woman he was looking for to the Lord. In Genesis 24:14, he says, "This is my request. I will ask one of them, 'Please give me a drink from your jug.' If she says, 'Yes, have a drink, and I will water your camels, too!'—let her be the one you have selected as Isaac's wife."
I love how the servant doesn't describe physical attributes; instead, he focuses on personality, and the woman turns out to be very beautiful! However, let us continue to verse 15:
"And it happened, before he had finished speaking, that behold, Rebecca, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, came out with her pitcher on her shoulder. Now the young woman was very beautiful to behold, a virgin; no man had known her…."
Before the servant finished his request, Rebecca came walking by. When we trust the Lord to make the connections for us, meetings can happen fast when it's the Father's will and the right timing. His beauty attracts those of the same spirit, and he brings such people together by leading them by his Spirit. He will move people across cities, states, or the globe to bring them together, and when the two become one, their union will glorify him and impact his kingdom.
The scripture says in verses 18 & 20 that she quickly gave the servant water from her pitcher and quickly started fetching water for his ten camels. The word "quickly" stands out because it implies a genuine response for her to be gracious, humble, and generous. She acted naturally when the servant approached her, and it was her natural self that the servant requested.
During our alone time with Jesus, he builds us up and helps us grow comfortable with being our genuine selves. Someone in God's kingdom has prayed for a spouse with your attributes. It's only a matter of time until you meet, or maybe you've already met; either way, be yourself touched by his beauty.
Rebecca was gorgeous, but she had inner beauty to match. It was her inner beauty that caught the eyes of the servant and made her the wife of Isaac. There are so many treasures in this passage to be revealed, but one that stands out is that Rebecca is the perfect example of his beauty and his Holy Spirit is the perfect matchmaker.
